How to send a fax internationally from Canada
Sending a fax overseas from a machine means remembering exit codes, paying long-distance rates and hoping the line holds. From a browser, it is mostly about getting the number format right and knowing how many pages it will use. This sendafax.ca guide covers dialling formats, costs by destination and a few habits that stop international faxes from failing.
Get Started NowGet the number in the right format
From a Canadian phone, overseas numbers are dialled with 011, then the country code, then the local number. The United States and many Caribbean countries share Canada's +1 country code, so those are dialled like a long-distance call within Canada.
Whatever you are using, collect the full number with its country code before you start. Ask the recipient for it in international format, which starts with a plus sign. Two common traps:
- Leading zeros. Many countries, such as the United Kingdom, write domestic numbers with a leading 0 that is dropped after the country code. A London number written 020 xxxx xxxx becomes +44 20 xxxx xxxx.
- Missing city or area codes. A number copied from a local letterhead may leave out a code the recipient never needs to dial at home.
Sending the fax
FaxToFax.com, the service sendafax.ca recommends, can send to more than 220 countries from any modern browser.
- Save the document as a PDF, PNG or JPG, or compose it in the editor on your letterhead.
- Sign in with your email and the one-time code.
- Attach the file and add a cover page with your name, company, phone number including +1, and the page count.
- Enter the full international fax number in the format the send screen asks for, and check it when it is confirmed before sending.
- Send now, or schedule the fax to arrive during the recipient's business day.
- Watch for the Delivered status and keep the time-stamped receipt.
What international pages cost
Plan pages are used differently depending on the destination. A page faxed to Canada, the United States or the United Kingdom uses 1 plan page. Countries where calls cost more use more plan pages per page, up to 55 for the most expensive destinations, such as China. Faxes you receive from abroad count once per page, regardless of where they came from.
On the Personal plan you get 200 pages a month, with extra pages at $0.10 each; on Business, 500 pages with extras at $0.07. A failed attempt uses no pages, so a retry does not cost twice.
Timing and paper sizes
A fax that arrives in the middle of the night at an office with its machine switched off will fail. Check the time difference and schedule the fax, up to 90 days ahead, for the recipient's morning. Remember that weekends and public holidays differ by country.
Most of the world uses A4 paper, slightly longer and narrower than North American letter size. A fax prints fine either way, but keep wide margins so nothing is cut off at the edge. If you are sending a form the recipient must fill in and return, mention on the cover page that it was prepared on letter-size paper, so they know why the layout looks slightly different when printed.
How to Send a Fax Internationally from Canada: questions
Do I type 011 before the number?
Enter the number with its country code in the format the send screen asks for. The 011 exit code is for dialling overseas from a Canadian phone line.
Is faxing to the United States international?
It uses the +1 country code like Canada, and a page to the U.S. uses 1 plan page, the same as a page within Canada.
Why did my fax to Europe fail?
Common causes are a leading zero left in after the country code, a missing area code, or a machine switched off outside business hours. Fix the number or schedule it for their morning.
Can I receive faxes from overseas?
Yes. Give the sender your number with +1 in front. Each received page counts once, wherever it comes from.
